AN EVENT CREATED BY MODERN JEWELERS
AN EVENT CREATED BY MODERN JEWELERS
In the spring of 2018, we conducted an essay contest at St. John Fisher School, where the winner won a 1/2ct round brilliant cut diamond, and the runners-up won gemstones. The essay prompt was: “Why would your mom be honored with the diamond?” The entire school, from 1st grade to 8th grade, was eligible to participate in the contest. The faculty were in charge of choosing the grand prize winner as well as the top eight essays from each class to be awarded with a gemstone. At the end of the event, we handed out sixty-three gemstones and one diamond.
Regardless of the students winning a prize or not, mothers were the winners. They were rewarded with a heartwarming essay from their child to treasure.
It was a fun and delightful event.
Spotlight on our Community Partner
Modern Jewelers
and our One-of-a-Kind Charm
When a Las Candalistas member has been Active for 10 years, they receive something very special. This one-of-a-kind item is a Charm, made to look like the basket in our logo. With a unique item like this comes a special story . . . There are always people behind the scenes that we rarely hear about, but they have a great impact.
Over ten years ago the leadership of Las Candalistas decided to redo the current 10 year charm, for various reasons. Marge Rankin, long-time member and President at that time, reached out to Sam Pheng, Owner of Modern Jewelers in Torrance. He was a neighbor of hers and was known for his passion to support the community. He created the mold (which took quite a bit of time and expense) and also made spot for the diamond our 20-year Active embers receive. He did not charge us the mold or his time!
Sam told us” “Over a decade ago, Marge came to our store to inquire if we could help with the flower bouquet charm. Of course, we could and are happy to help. And for the past five or six years, we have been donating the charms for as many as needed by Las Candalistas. My wife, Cindy, and I feel this is one of the ways for us to contribute to the community.”
The charms are beautiful and are treasured by our membership. We are so touched by Sam and Cindy’s generosity!
Thank you, Sam and Cindy for your construed support of the Las Candlistas and the South Bay Community.
